The delightful little town of Millville, located
in Sussex county was founded in 1906, with it's families consisting of ship
captain's, watermen, millers and farmers. Though tiny, Millville offers an
immense quantity of historical beauty, a tranquil and serene ambiance and a
location hard to match, as it is cozy neighbors with Ocean View, Bethany Beach,
Lewes and Rehoboth.
The main road that travels through this charming
town was first created in the 1920's with all of it's side roads consisting of
dirt until the 1940's. This being the case, the main transportation during this
period of time were horses and ponies. Millville's first firehouse was built in
the late 1930's with their first fire truck arriving in 1936. Like many of it's
neighboring cities, Millville's settlers livelihood came from farming soy,
vegetables, strawberries, and finally in 1923, the poultry business with Ocean
View launching the first Broiler Industry. Other provisions came from cutting
timber, saw mills, and fishing, as once the land was cleared, the local
waterways offered an abundance of fresh fish, crab, clams and oysters.
When driving through Millville, even though close
to the water, the fetching atmosphere is not only romantic, but creates a mood
of being out in the country or perhaps a Victorian town with all it's quaint
boutiques, old homes and alluring eateries. Even though Millville is vastly
growing, every street still offers many beautiful sights of the towns lush, and
enduring history.
Good food is about expression and enjoyment and in
Millville, there are wonderful and diverse eateries to please every kind of
palate. The Fat Tuna Grill, specializing in gourmet dishes such as cilantro
tuna, fresh shrimp steamed in the famous Dog Fish Head Ale and savory crab
cakes. This eatery offers a Sunday Brunch as well as a patio bar. The American
Grill cuisine offers comfort foods, garlic mashed potatoes and fresh veggies.
The Hunan Royale has delicious ribs, crab wontons and steak terriyaki. For a
lighter bite to eat, Millville offers The Fractured Prune Donut Shoppe with hot
hand dipped donuts, bagels and scrumptious breakfast sandwiches. Lastly, for a
quick stop for lunch, there is the famous Hocker's market, (the steak and cheese
sandwiches are mouth watering), and Casapullas, (a diverse selection of savory
subs and salads).
With Millville's location being centrally located
to so many other cities and their bounty of museums, sandy beaches, the Tanger
outlets in Rehoboth, Midway theatre's and fitness centers, one of the 'must see'
places to visit while in Millville is Holt's Landing state park on Island Bay.
On this beautiful 204 acre park, one can enjoy boating, fishing, nature trails
along with a playground and picnic area. For those who love to golf, there is
Bethany Bay Golf Club, Salt Pond Golf Club, ( an18 hole golf course) and the
Bethany Club Tennis on Fenwick Island with it's eight har-tru tennis court,
clubhouse facility and a wonderful, supportive staff.
So, whether one is looking for a vacation spot, a
summer retreat or a quaint, peaceful place to settle down in, Millville,
Delaware is the perfect spot with friendly people, entrancing beauty, history
and a location that offers a bounty of all the things life has to offer.
