Nestled on the Indian River in Sussex County Delaware, is the alluring town of Millsboro. This charming town was established in 1792 when a gentleman by the name of Elisha Dickerson built a damn that shut off the headwaters of the Indian River at Rock Hole. Elisha established a large saw mill as well as grist mill in town. These mills were two of the fifteen mills established in a four mile radius in the early 19th century. The name (at that time being Millsborough) applied to all of the land that was located on the north east side of the river, receiving it's name in 1908. The residents there adopted it as an alternative to the earlier 'Rock Hole Mills'. Another expanding community, located on the south west side of the river was called 'Washington'. It was in1837, when the two villages became a single community under Millsborough and shortly after, the name was shortened to what is now the towns official name, Millsboro. Other industries that promoted much growth to this land by the river was tannery, large shipments of cypress, as well as the charcoal businesses. In both the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as today, Millsboro's back bone is agriculture and lumber. In the 1930's the dominate crop was the broiler. In 1940, Townsend's INC. had become the nations first fully integrated poultry company.
Millsboro is surrounded by beauty, history and an abundance of water. For those who enjoy nature and being outside, there are plenty of places to visit. Bay Wood Greens offers an 18 hole championship golf course that is sure to please golfers of every level. There is also the popular Emerald Green's Golf Course where golfers compete in their game amongst preserved marshland and an abundance of natural beauty. For those who are connoisseurs of wildlife, Milsboro Pond is a must see, especially during the season where the bald eagles roost. Ingram's pond is another entrancing place to see with all of it's lush history and swampland. The Indian River offers wonderful fishing and boating and the Atlantic Ocean beckons every surfer to come and ride the wild waves!
Though the neighboring cities to Millsboro, (especially the resort beach area) offer many superb eateries, this quaint little town has wonderful places to eat at as well. For a dining experience that will take each guest back in time to their grandmother's kitchen table, The Georgia House is the place to go. Each entree tastes like it is home cooked and brings one that warm and cozy feeling all over. Whether it is mouth watering chicken fried steak accompanied by mashed potatoes and gravy, or savory fresh seafood pasta, their infamous bread basket, crab bisque or a specialty salad, every palate will be pleased in leaving this charming eatery. For fresh seafood, Millsboro hosts the Crab Barn, another restaurant that is sure to satisfy both the young and the old!
The location of Millsboro couldn't be better as it is close to the famous and frequently visited beach resort cities of Lewes, Rehoboth, Bethany and Ocean City. For those who love to shop until they drop, Rehoboth's Tanger Outlets is the place to go! With over 130 name brand shops, (and all the shopping tax free), there is certainly something for everyone and plenty of places to grab a quick bite to refuel one's energy for the 'hunt'. Some of the shops at Tanger are; Christmas Tree Hill, Harry and David's, L&L Bean, Le Gourmet Chef and Liz Claiborne. For more eccentric browsing, Rehoboth's down town has a variety of lovely and quaint shops that are very unique. The resort beach area offers something for everyone. For the kids, there is Jungle Jim's with a fantastic water park and bumper cars. While in the seafaring city of Lewes, be sure to take in the historic and magnificent lighthouses. Off of Cape Henlopen is The Delaware Breakwater east end lighthouse. It was established in 1885 to guide ships safely into the Delaware Bay. The Cape Henlopen Lighthouse was built between 1765 to 1767 and upon it's completion, it was known to be the seventh lighthouse of the American colonies. As with all beach communities, the beach offers and abundance of outdoor activities such as fishing, beach combing, surfing, clamming, sand castle building. While in Rehoboth, be sure to visit the renown Boardwalk.
Not only is Millsboro a beautiful little town with a rich history and situated in a location that is desirable and perfect for every need and want, but it is also a town that is near by to wonderful historic cities. Within a few short hours is Annapolis, Washington DC, Baltimore and Wilmington. Millsboro is an excellent place to visit, settle down in as well as seek employment.
