Milford is a quaint and historic place to live,
nestled in the heart of Southern Delaware and is the states 4th
largest city. Integrated in the year of 1807, Milford is located in two separate
counties, Sussex and Kent. Many of the homes and buildings in Milford are listed
in the National Register of Historic Places. The historical B&B Towers is
part of Milford's exuberant history. Noteworthy occupants of The Towers in the
early 19th century included poet John Lofland and one of Delaware's
Governors, William Burton. The residents of this city all agree that Milford
holds a perfect location. Within 100 mile radius, one can travel to the
beautiful cities of Annapolis, Washington DC, Baltimore and Wilmington. In less
than and hour, with Rehoboth beach, Lewes and the infamous Ocean City near by,
there is sunbathing, surfing, swimming and plenty of good shopping to be
had.
What one may not know is the lush history of
Shipbuilding that Milford once had. In the year 1770, the famous Mispillion
River, that runs through the heart of downtown Milford, was once extremely
prosperous with a shipbuilding industry. Shipbuilding continued to be Milford's
largest profit making business through World War 1. In 1917, the 4 masted, 174
foot long ship named Albert F. Paul was launched on the Mispillion River and
later, in 1942, it was sunk by a German torpedo.
Milford is the perfect place to settle down for
both the young and the old, single and married with it's many enticing city
attractions. For those who love to explore history, there a three historical
places to visit. The Parson Thorne Mansion, Lydia Ann B. Cannon Museum and the
Milford Museum. Some of the historical treasures of these places are displays of
early shipbuilding tools, theoretical accounts of ships showing Milford's
amazing nautical past, silver collections of spoons, coins and many novelties.
For those who love the outdoors, there is Abbott's Mill Nature Center where self
guided hiking, canoe trails and a 23 acre pond await any nature lover's passion.
The city also hosts another place to enjoy the warm summer days with biking,
camping, hiking and sight seeing with the popular Killian's pond. For the ones
who enjoy shopping, good food and a stop into the bakery to enjoy cappuccino and
fresh pastries, Milford offers many great Cafe's, quaint antique stores, coffee
shops and unique eateries. Nestled in the downtown area is Dolce Bakery and
coffee shop, The Georgia House, (all the meals taste as if they are straight
from your Grandma's kitchen), and The Victorian Lady, (A Victorian Tea room,
specializing in scones, quiches and hearty salads). Other Milford Eateries that
present soothing ambiances and fine dining are The Executive, (great pasta's,
homemade breads, and scrumptious Prime Rib,) and Smith and Company, (Gourmet
dishes, delicious appetizers and homemade soups).
Lastly, Milford is known for it's charming River
walk. A delightful place to stroll with friends and family, enjoying a cup of
coffee in the winter or fresh lemonade in the summer. The River walk runs along
the famous Misspillion River that is approximately 15 miles long and drains in
an area of 76 square miles. This river once held seven ship yards that created over 600 wooden sailing ships.
This historical, charming and quaint city has
something for everyone. Beauty, history, new homes with it's rapid growth over
the last few years, low housing taxes, plenty of lovely, restored historical
homes, friendly people, wonderful shopping, fitness centers, a great hospital,
youth center, scouting, Country club and golf course and a perfect location for
everything anyone could want or need.
